The Youth Issues Candidates’ Forum is a student led project that gives youth the opportunity to have their voices heard by selected candidates. Youth will interact with candidates by asking them questions developed from topics of concern in their schools or community. At the end of the forum the Spokane County Auditor hosts a mock election in which youth can vote for the candidate of their choice.
In addition students will have the opportunity to vote on the following ballot initiatives:
- Should the State of Washington raise the legal gambling age from 18 to 21?
- Should grocery, drug, and convenience stores be required to collect a 20-cent fee on all disposable shopping bags provided to customers, to support garbage reduction and recycling programs?
- Should the United States government reinstate the Draft in support of the war (Selective Service System)?
- Shall the City Charter be amended to add a Community Bill of Rights which seeks to build a healthy, sustainable, and democratic Spokane by securing rights to a locally-based economy, affordable and renewable energy, affordable preventative healthcare, affordable housing, a healthy environment, and constitutional rights in the workplace, as well as to apprenticeship training and a prevailing wage on certain construction projects; and by securing the right to determine the future of neighborhoods.
- Should Spokane support early childhood, after school programs, mentoring, and child abuse and neglect programs by approving a five-year levy of thirty five cents per one thousand dollars of assessed property value? This would put $5 million dollars into a fund to support youth programs.
